What is this #GrannyHair that is flooding social media? Well, apparently young women are no longer frightened by grey hairs; in fact, they’re embracing this new trend rather quickly. The days of middle-aged women gathering at their local beauty salon to disguise their grey hair with a more natural looking dye seems to be coming to an abrupt halt as women of all ages embrace the slogan, “grey isn’t just for geriatrics.” Women are now going to their local beauty salons or corner convenience stores to permanently dye their hair grey.

From city streets to celebrity styles, #GrannyHair has continued to gain popularity. Although Lady Gaga has been known for her eccentric and unorthodox fashion choices, after she dyed her hair grey last November this fad quickly gained momentum. Gaga was far from alone when serving as a trendsetter for this style. Other celebrities such as, Jamie Lee Curtis, Paula Deen, Kelly Osbourne, and Nicole Richie jumped on the ‘dye your hair grey’ bandwagon.

Pictures of women of all different ages with all different hairstyles are appearing on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and other social media sites. This popular trend has shown that women of every age, style, and hair length can rock the grey. Whether you’re 18 or 81, grey is guaranteed look gorgeous on you.

Thinking about going grey? Be informed. Before making an appointment or driving to a drug store, do your research. There are many things to consider. Are you looking for a permanent or semi-permanent color change? If you’re not sure if you’re going to like the grey hair, then it might be best to go with a semi-permanent option for the first dye. Remember, the beauty of hair dye is that if you don’t like it, you can always change it. This semi-permanent hair dye will slowly fade with each shampoo. After a few weeks, your hair returns to its natural color.

Another question to have answered before arranging plans to change your hair is to know exactly what shade of grey will look best on you. If you have a lighter complexion, you may want to consider a light-mid grey. If your skin is a bit darker then it’s best to go for a medium or dark selection. If you’re going for a more edgy appearance then pair a soft grey with a pastel. The color will pop and you’ll look fabulous. Most women going the edgy route seem to be adding purple, but any color looks terrific.

So what do you think, is it Granny or Trendy?

Most importantly, as with any change in your appearance, be confident. Know that you are beautiful and you look great with or without the #GrannyHair.
