“You call yourself a free spirit, a “wild thing,” and you’re terrified somebody’s gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you’re already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it’s not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It’s wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself.”
― Truman Capote,
In our culture today, the word “yogi” is a buzzword. It’s on everyone’s Instagram feed. Whether you practice Yoga to get fit, to get likes or to find inner peace, Yoga does the work. It does the magic. For Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, her sacred space was at Tiffany’s: ¨ that lovely smell of silver and alligator wallets¨, it was calming to her.
I found this same stillness and quietness on a lilac Yoga mat last year. I started practicing Yoga in October 2017. Six months ago, I was diagnosed with Anxiety… I never thought yoga would have such an impact on my life. My vision changed, my love for myself grew and I felt, for the first time, connected with my inner self. I am aware of the thoughts, emotions, aches, pains, judgements and everything in between.
Nobody really understands the mysteries of anxiety. Even after reading tons of books, talking about your emotions…No one really knows how the tingling in your fingers scares you when you are gasping for air. Trying to stay calm but your body & mind won’t listen. At one point, you hate yourself for being different. You feel like you are always trying so hard to tame your inner beast. Control it.
Taking control is an action I learned on my mat. If you can control your breathing you will be on your way to controlling your body, which in turn gives you control over your mind. According to Vedic and Hindu philosophy, every Yogi goes through Seven stages of development before achieving complete liberation. I don’t know at which stage I am right now, but I know that I’ve developed a ¨protective shield¨when I attend my yoga class. A bubble where nothing else matters; it’s me, myself and I.
I’m a wild child, a gemini. Sometimes, I act spontaneously. Sometimes, I love to be fearlessly reckless.
I learned that you become what you think and what you think goes into the Universe. Start by thinking happy thoughts and see how you day goes. The Universe listens. It is there to guide you, but you are the one who needs to take action. Someone once told me that he liked my ¨radio frequency¨, he was referring to my energy. Our bodies are made of; cells, molecules, atoms and then there is energy. When you get down to it, everything is energy.
It all comes down to one thing: HAPPINESS.
I found my Yoga home at Dama Yoga. A Hot Yoga studio on the south shore of Montréal, five minutes from home. There is such a good vibe every time I go. The teachers make you feel like you are part of a family, a community. Dani, founder & teacher, looks at you in a mystical way. She looks into your soul and gets you. One day after class, she asked me; did something happened in your life? I knew what she was talking about. I nodded. She knew. As simple as that. Somehow, I felt understood, loved and accepted.
At the studio, I’m always learning and evolving. Now, it’s time to practice what you preach. I’m trying (yes still trying) to apply my ¨yogi¨side on the daily; at work, with my relationships and specially with myself. I took baby steps and now I can say that I am more in control of my anxiety… I’m still figuring out, living with this lion inside of me.
I’m authentic. This is what matters the most. Be you.
