Reigning above all others past and present as our favorite fashion muse, Audrey Hepburn embodied grace, elegance, and class. Her timeless style was her signature, and even in an age where glamour was glamour, she stood out from the rest.

Audrey’s first secret is no big secret: BLACK BLACK BLACK. Slimming and ever on point, black is always in. Black is the perfect color for enhancing your natural beauty, and just the mention of Audrey Hepburn’s name is evocative of iconic black and whites. When you’ve got a face that gorgeous, show it off without distracting patterns and colors. Plus, if you’re dodging the paparazzi, black is always flattering! With her flawless complexion and clean simple makeup, Audrey embodied elegance. Too much makeup not only looks distracting and unfortunate, it can also lead to damaged skin. Keep your look clean and simple, and let your natural beauty show through. Known for her large dark sunglasses, big hats, and jewels, Audrey Hepburn didn’t follow trends, rather she set them. When building your own wardrobe, heed this advice. Choose pieces that speak to you, and that you can pair with other favorites for years to come. Trendy items will be out soon, and are just a waste of money, so invest wisely in your wardrobe.

Perhaps the only thing to overshadow Audrey’s natural beauty was her inner beauty. After an aristocratic upbringing, divorce and WWII plunged Audrey and her mother into the depths of poverty. Often resorting to eating flower bulbs to simply stay alive, Audrey began dancing ballet for groups of people in order to earn money for food. When the war ended, a malnourished Audrey moved with her mother to London, where she continued ballet and began modelling to relieve the strain on her mother.

Audrey Hepburn’s first movie role was that of a ballerina, and with hard work and determination, she continued to persevere. Soon, America came calling and nothing would ever be the same. Skyrocketing fame put her opposite most of Hollywood’s leading men, and she captivated the world with her style and her spirit.

You call yourself a free spirit, a “wild thing,” and you’re terrified somebody’s gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you’re already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it’s not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It’s wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself.

-Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Looking back through shots of Old Hollywood, her effortless beauty and chic style seem as though they may have been plucked from the pages of modern day fashion spreads. Audrey was known for her large dark sunglasses, large hats, and sleek lines, which are right up our alley. We asked ourselves,What is the key to achieving timeless style that lasts through generations?. What we came up with is a short list of Audrey-inspired ways to a flawless, classic look.

One last way to be Audrey Hepburn fabulous. Be you. Be real. Be love. Though it seems impossible these days, Audrey seemed literally unaffected by fame. Her experience with the Nazis during WWII made an everlasting impression, and after recording her final film, she dedicated her remaining days to helping impoverished children around the world. (Yeah. Just when you thought she couldn’t get any more beautiful.)Today’s ultimate modern woman would be a lot like the great Audrey Hepburn.

After all, a great outfit and a pretty face can only go so far…
